Trip to Glendale was a popular event
You know you've done well when people ask for an encore and that was the case with last year's trip to Glendale. There are so many craft and antique stores that it's difficult to see them all in one trip. Plus the relaxed atmosphere of the old town creates a pleasant place to just sit in the shade of an inviting porch and watch the world go by.
The group enjoyed the company of several visitors. Judy Akers' sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Eddy Clark, got a good taste of the Model A habit. Joe Holbrook, who thirty years ago hauled an unrestored Town Sedan home for teenager Jeff Rhoads, enjoyed traveling with Jeff in the finished project. William Bell from West Virginia learned of the trip from our web site and decided to combine it with a visit to his grandson Ryan Pennewitt in Lexington. 21 year old Ryan drove grandpa's roadster like a pro and was heard encouraging William to leave the car in Ky. so they could go on some more tours. This was a day spent well, making memories with family and friends.
2006 membership meet
Planning for our 2006 MARC Membership Meet in Lexington is moving forward at a steady pace. Bill Bates and his committee have negotiated a great deal with the Holiday Inn to host the event. Other local car groups have had good service from them on similar events and the facility meets all our needs. John Blair and his group have been busy contacting local businesses to obtain commitments of support for advertising and door prizes. Judy Akers met with several of the ladies of the club to design the goody bags that will be distributed at registration. Herman Butler has created several touring options that will compliment the schedule of seminars. The planning is coming along well but there is still much to do. The next meeting will be Sept. 9th at 6:30 at the home of Jack and Linda Kubik. A good crowd came to the last hot dog cook out planning session so that strategy will be repeated on the 9th. If you haven't been able to come to any of the planning sessions don't feel left out, when this event gets closer to reality there will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to help out. Keep March 30th - April 6th 2006 marked on the calendar, it will be here before you know it.
Driving Awards
Most Model A Fords that have survived now have a pretty relaxed life. Occasionally a local parade or a trip to a nearby Dairy Queen is all the action they're likely to see. That's fine, Lord knows they've earned the rest. However the A is very reliable, easily repaired and parts are readily available at reasonable prices. That helps explain why so many are still on the road.
Many of you take pride in not only owning a Model A but also in driving it. Our national club encourages that attitude with a driving awards program. Although this program has existed for many years many of the local clubs, including our own have not taken an active part in maintaing the record keeping required to receive the awards. Jack Kubik has volunteered to organize the program for us and asks all those interested to contact him and register your car. Award eligibility begins at the time of registration with the first award at 2000 miles, next 5000 miles and then at every 5000 mile increment. Many in our club drive their Model A several thousand miles each year and this will be an excellent way to acknowledge their future efforts to keep these great old cars out and about. The cars need to be out there to develop the next generation of of Model A Ford drivers.
