Telephone museum makes interesting trip
Old car enthusiasts tend to like other things that were part of the culture during the time their antique automobile was in regular use. If you visit a Model A Ford owner you’ll probably discover a radio, gas pump, toys, clothing or something from the late twenties or early thirties proudly displayed somewhere in the home or garage.
This characteristic helps explain many of our club’s monthly destinations. The recent outing to Winchester and a large collection of telephone equipment from days gone by is a good example. Looking at the boxy wooden telephones with their bakelite receivers and fabric covered wiring it was easy to see similarities in the materials and technologies used in creating the Model A. Part of the fascination with things from this era is the opportunity for tinkering. Easily accessible is the gizmo attached to the thingumajig that turns a great big cast iron whatchamucallit. And it’s all put together with nuts, bolts and screws just begging to be adjusted, then broken or stripped. Our modern throw away technology is sealed in plastic and our need to tinker is supposed to be pacified with the buttons on the remote control. However the determined look on the faces of these Model A folks reveal a common thought. Give me a screwdriver, a pair of pliers and some wire and I’ll have this thing working in an hour. Fortunately our need to eat is even greater than our desire to take things apart and the group moved with no knuckle busting incidents to the Caintuck Restaurant.
Many thanks to Ron Looney and John Yates for arranging this outstanding day trip. They even managed to get the weather just right with a bright sunny sky.

Share the ride
Part of the fun of owning a Model A Ford is seeing the smiles of those who have fond memories of a car just like yours. Sure it was a different color and body style and made by Chevrolet, but it was just like yours. This spring club members have an opportunity to help the residents of the St. Andrew’s Retirement Community rekindle some fond memories. A time when you could adjust the carburetor from the driver’s seat and all the best horns said AHOOGA.
Kelly Benton, activities director, invites all interested to display their antique car on Saturday, May 15th from 2:00 to 4:00, rain or shine. There is no entry fee or judging, just a good time sharing your hobby with an appreciative audience. Those club members who have participated in similar activities say this is a very rewarding experience, especially if you have the opportunity to give someone a ride around the parking lot. This is one of those occasions where what you give in time and effort comes back to you many times over in satisfaction.
St. Andrews Retirement Community is located off Tates Creek Road next to Million Park. If you have any questions about the event or would like to confirm your participation, contact Kelly at 859-625-9881.

Want to go hill climbing?
Most of us are relieved just to get our old cars up a hill, but there are those who go hill climbing just for fun. Herman Butler was recently asked to inform our club about such an event. The Alabama Rambling A’s are sponsoring a competition to determine who can climb Monkey Hill in the quickest time in a Model T or Model A Ford and they have invited us to come and enjoy the event.
If you’re not interested in competing you can still enjoy being a spectator. You will definitely enjoy driving through the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and visiting Highlands, North Carolina, the event location. Along with the hill climb and scenic driving there will also be several seminars offered for those interested in getting more power from their Model A engine.
If you are interested in attending, the date for the meet is September 9-12. The meet headquarters will be the Mountain High Lodge in Highlands, North Carolina, 800-445-7293, but there are many other convenient places to stay in the area. If you would like additional information contact the meet chairman, David Black, phone 256-287-0317 or e-mail david_black@model-a-man.com and he will give you all the details about this event.
