| Get ready for a road trip
Club adopts full schedule of events for 2008 (Click here for schedule)
If you enjoy exploring scenic
back roads in the Model A, you
will have a lot of opportunities
this year. Members provided many
excellent ideas at the annual
Christmas meeting and your board
of directors met early in January to
put them in place. Our members
are a diverse group and the touring
schedule reflects that, with
something for everyone. For those
who like short day trips we have
tours scattered throughout the
Central Kentucky area. Everyone
can participate in an event close to
home. Those who like extended
trips should be pleased with a
week on the Natchez Trace,
watching spring arrive as we travel
south through Tennessee, Alabama
and Mississippi.
Whether its picnics, country
stores, or hanging out with other
gear heads, there should be several
events you will enjoy. The problem
is usually finding time to do it all.
The details are inside, you’re
encouraged to mark your calendar
now to avoid schedule conflicts
later. The Checkmark will continue
to update tour information
throughout the year and inform
you of other events not on the
schedule that might be of interest
to our members. If you know of
such events let your editor know,
so the information may be shared
with other members.
SPRING COMES ALIVE ON THE TRACE
How would you like to travel south in your Model A,
leaving the gray winter skies of Kentucky behind as you
watch the redbuds bloom, the dogwoods blossom and
the azaleas flower? In the spring of 2001 several of our
members had the pleasure of driving their old cars down
the 450 mile Natchez Trace to the southern end of the
Mississippi River. Since then there has been much
discussion about going back, and this is the year. Mary
and Jeff Rhoads, who led the last trip, have agreed to
guide us again. They have researched the many
interesting stops along this scenic highway and will make
sure we don’t miss a thing. The trace is a perfect Model
A road. Like the Blue Ridge Parkway, it is protected
from commercial traffic and the 45 m.p.h. speed limit is
strictly enforced. From the hills of it’s Nashville
beginning, the road flattens out and the Model A rolls
effortlessly along.
With eight days on the road you’ll get a good look at
the countryside and there’s lots to see. Aside from the
scenic beauty, we’ll be passing through some of the most
historically significant areas of our country’s early
frontier and civil war eras. If you’re more interested in
modern history we’ll also visit the hometowns of Elvis
and Oprah. Old car museums are also a good possibility.
If this sounds like a trip for you, it’s important to let
Mary and Jeff know soon, to be included in the planning
stages. Lodging has to be arranged early and it’s easier to
cancel out than be added on as the group gets further
along in the plans. You can reach Mary and Jeff at
859-273-9593 and JRhoads@windstream.net or come to
the January event to hear what has already been planned.
RABBIT RUN FELLOWSHIP MEAL JANUARY 26
Winter touring weather is unpredictable, but you can always count on Model A folks showing up to eat. Bring your favorite side dish or dessert , the club will furnish the rest. We’ll eat around 11:30, but come an hour earlier for some good fellowship. If you have some photos to share bring them along. We’ll be set up to play videos and watch the UK game or if you prefer, a mean game of dominos will be ongoing. Rabbit Run Recreation Center is located at 1920 Fort Harrod Dr. just off Harrodsburg Road. For more details and better directions call Linda or Delmer Dalton at 859-223-5078.
Grant & Jennifer Baker
246 Koster St.
Lexington, KY 40503
gbaker@qx.net
After several years of searching and saving for an antique car, we bought our 1930 Tudor Sedan in March, 2007. Grant spent the next 7 months working on the mechanics while Jennifer hand crafted the lovely seat covers. It has already been on several CKMARC activities plus countless errands and joy rides around
Lexington. Our Model A is all go and no show. We enjoy driving a “barn fresh” Model A and Andrew enjoys “fixing” the bumpers and fenders using any wrenches or hammers that happen to be lying around. Don’t worry though, we’ll keep him away from your car!
Help Create a Club Directory
Pick out your best photo of you and your Model A and jot down a few notes you would like included in our new directory. On the left is an example of what we would like to do for each member. Grant Baker has volunteered to put it all together for us. When it’s done you’ll get a free copy. Grant would prefer to have the information sent to him by email but if that isn’t practical for you mail it to the Checkmark address or give it to one of your board members during one of our monthly events.
President Allan Wickersham
Greetings! What a great year we have planned for enjoying our favorite old car and each other’s company. Take part in as much of it as possible. We have several volunteers working on special projects for the club, please support their effort and don’t delay providing them with the information they need. Remember the end of this month is the last chance to order a new club jacket for half price. Come to the January event and try one on for a good fit.
Secretary Judy Akers
Let's have a Happy Touring Year! It was great last year and I can't wait to get started this year. At the December meeting we elected our new board of directors. There will be some business regarding a national meet to discuss at our January event. Please let me know of any health issues or deaths involving our members so I can send an appropriate response.
Treasurer Mike Tearney
Gene Swisher and I are in the process of transferring all the responsibilities of the office and I now have a much greater appreciation for his contribution to the club. Gene says we made $607.75 on the December silent auction, the best results ever. If you haven’t paid your club dues please mail them to me at 4890 McCowans Ferry Road Versailles, KY 40383. They are still only $10 individual or $15 for a family.
We Need Your Mileage
CKMARC has a widespread reputation as a "driving" club, and we would like to document just how many miles we really travel in our Model A's. Supreme Potentate Allan has authorized (forced) me to collect this data. At the end of the year, we hope to be able to report the total number of miles we have logged as a club, how many average miles per vehicle, and how many cars and people attended each event. So, as soon as possible, I need the mileage on each of your Model A's. If you happen to have a non-working speedometer (hey, it's no disgrace) let me know and we'll use a separate log.
Call me at (859) 227-0695 or e-mail antiqueautopartsofky@gmail.com before January 31 so this project can be successful.
Thanks! Jerry Baker |
